June 16, 2008, Atlanta, GA – As organizations test and implement the new Windows Vista ™ and Windows Server ® 2008 operating systems, they’re finding inconvenience in a number of places. But, for those companies that rely on an existing log management strategy for compliance and internal security standards, they’re running into one big problem: The new EVTX log format.

Representatives with Dorian Software Creations, Inc. confirm that the numbers of calls and emails from customers who cannot open and review EVTX log files with their usual approach have been noticeably up in the last month. What used to be routine procedure – viewing and poring over event log files – has recently stopped some administrators dead in their tracks. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 log files cannot be reviewed on a Windows XP ® or Windows Server 2003 machine.

Amazingly, backwards compatibility with saved EVT files is not assured either - even when reviewing those legacy logs with the Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 Event Viewer. In many cases, key portions of log record fields are not parsed and formatted correctly, making accurate analysis of older log data a pipe dream.

Admin istrators are also finding that existing log strategies simply are not ready for the introduction of EVTX log entries. In fact, many log management products on the market today will simply not handle the EVTX log format at all. Even more problematic for IT professionals now are the internally developed scripts and programs designed for the earlier EVT logging format - the cost to update those technologies to support the new EVTX format can be staggering.

In 2007, Dorian Software launched its exclusive LogRefiner ™ technology well ahead of the wider public’s adoption of the EVTX format. Already incorporated into Dorian’s patented Total Event Log Management Solution ™ lineup, LogRefiner technology is intended to help organizations work with the EVT and EVTX logs side-by-side rather than in an “either/or” fashion.

Unfortunately, the newer operating systems and log products on the market handle the EVT/EVTX problem with exactly that “either/or” approach. One result – whether intended or unintended – is a “forced upgrade” scenario for many IT organizations.

Dorian believes its approach to the EVTX problem is more realistic and much more affordable with regard to long-term cost. Tightened IT spending and spotty adoption of the new operating systems in 2008 confirms the wisdom in this strategy.

Dorian Software continues to steer resources in the direction of expanding its proprietary LogRefiner technology and thus, EVTX log management capabilities. A new version of its Event Analyst - with even more expanded EVTX capability – will be available in June 2008.
