Compliance standards such as NERC-CIP and PCI DSS have again highlighted the importance of automating log file collection and consolidation. But, few realize until digging into a log management solution that WANs and high security networks can further complicate an already difficult requirement.
Though Event Archiver ® (http://www.eventarchiver.com) has been a component of Dorian Software’s patented Total Event Log Management Suite ™ (http://www.doriansoftware.com) since 1997, the growing complexity of today’s enterprise networks demands new capabilities in log collection and management.
Event Archiver’s agent-optional architecture continues to provide a robust collection solution for most networks. But now, Dorian is making its Importer ™ utility available for use alongside Event Archiver. Though in most cases the utility still isn’t a necessity for efficient log collection, more customers are finding it helpful in overcoming the challenges of distributed networks and extremely limited bandwidth.
Importer is essentially a companion utility that Dorian made available to customers on an as-needed basis in past years. Lately, wider demand for such a tool alongside Event Archiver has been undeniable.
Here’s how it works: Dorian’s Importer constantly polls a directory on the computer where it is installed for incoming compressed log files collected by various Event Archiver installations throughout the network. Each Event Archiver installation can be configured to transmit these compressed log files automatically via standard Windows Network shared folders or via FTP.
Once the files arrive in the incoming directory, the Event Archiver Importer Service immediately decompresses them and imports their contents into centralized tables on an Oracle ® or Microsoft SQL Server ® database. User-defined filters can cause unneeded events to be dropped at time of import, saving valuable database space over time.
Though it requires an existing installation of Event Archiver, Importer is available for $999.95 USD per database server it imports log data into. As a result, enterprise quality log management is available at a fraction of the cost of many console or appliance-based products on the market. And, such products may not even provide the more granular capability that the Event Archiver with Importer combination offers for dedicated log collection.
